Project: Colors and Ideas

In starting to troll the web for ideas, the first thing that caught my eye was this ribbon:

Advantages: it's bright, it's got lots of color. It doesn't scream "wedding." I kind of like that. We can use it with plain gold wire ribbon, to make it go further. The colors could work for summer or fall, depending on what they're paired with. We could also choose any one of the colors to pick up in other things: work the red, or the green, or the gold, etc. Disadvantages - It's not dirt cheap: SPRING PALETTE WIRE EDGE 1 5/16" 10 YD PER SPOOL, Price: $5.00. It is very bright, so it will be a challenge to work with to some degree. But me likes the shiny bright pretty-pretty, so that's kind of a wash.

Then I noticed this cake:

Not to buy, the baker's in Richmond. And not necessarily in these colors, though I do think it's cool. But to make. Ourselves. Specifically, technically, Don. He's quite good at baking, and has a decorative cake book with fondant frosting recipes. This pic shows me that we can we can paint the fondant, use stencils with luster dust, and hide the seams with ribbons. Oh, and we can even buy pre-colored fondant or predone flower toppers like this one (though NOT this topper with that cake, that would be nasty):

I realized I had a theme going when I noticed these invitations:

Okay, maybe not these exact ones, but what if I knock off the concept and reuse the same ribbon as that first one I was looking at? There are hundreds of cardstock companies; we can order blank cardstock with or without the holes punched, and then make the dang things ourselves. We could even make them square and put them into a pod type envelope. The key: to find the pieces as inexpensively as possible.

I talked this over with Don to see what he thought (he can tell you himself when he gets around to posting). He likes the idea of choosing a pattern and repeating it, it kind of makes it look like we have a theme even though we don't. He liked the invite, better than some of the other ones I pointed out (I'll be posting an invite post as one of my first major purchase projects) and thinks the cake is probably doable, though not that exact cake - as I suspected, it's a little much. But we can repeat the ribbon pattern on it. Before we buy that ribbon, we're going to do a little looking around to see what other options are out there and at what price. We'll hit Hobby Lobby, Ben Franklin, and Michael's. I don't think Dick Blick has ribbons, so we'll save that one for invites. I've also been searching the web for "Ombre" and "Wire ribbon" trying to focus on multiple colors. If we don't see anything we like better, or equally, and cheaper, I'll probably just buy a bunch of the ribbon listed here.

This is where we're at right now, but we now need to cull through hundreds of websites to find the best ideas. Anyone who wants to help or offer suggestions for different ideas is very welcome to post, either in comments or on the website itself. Also, if you want to help look for other ribbons, feel free to troll the web, or stop by the ribbon aisle if you happen to be in a craft store. I'm starting to put links up on the side, organized by: 1) Type of link (invites, decorations, etc.); 2) General vendor links on top; 3) Links to specific ideas (freeze dried rose petals - don't need to buy roses and rip them up by hand) at the bottom. We can add links as we get them.

Hey about the topper - another idea is either real or silk flowers as toppers. I had real flowers on top of my cake to decorate it - and it was awesome.

I'm debating that. On the one hand, real flowers are prettier. On the other hand, these sugar things last for freaking ever, just ask Ellen K. We'll have to price them. Of course, I could be a rebel and go without a cake topper (gasp!)
