Update - Performance Dates and Venues
From the email:
About just having the hors d’ oeuvres – I’ve been looking at the Highlander menu (they have the 26th of July open) and saw that they have carving stations:
CARVING STATIONS
Served with Silver Dollar Rolls and appropriate condiments.
Roast Steamship of Beef
Served with Horseradish and Au jus (Serves 125) $495.00

They also have some decent hors d’ oeuvres:
COLD HORS D’OEVRES
(prices per 50 pieces, minimum order)

HOT HORS D’OEUVRES
(priced per 50 pieces, minimum order)
Served with appropriate condiments
Highlander’s Own Onion Rings $40.00 Fried Mozzarella Sticks $55.00
Breaded Cauliflower $40.00 Crabmeat Rangoon $45.00
Breaded Mushrooms $40.00 Mini Egg Rolls W/ Sweet & Sour $45.00

BBQ or Swedish Meetballs $50.00 Calamari $45.00
Sausage Stuffed Mushroom Caps *$45.00 Shrimp Skewers *105.00
Mini Chicken Tacos $45.00 Cajun or Ranch Chicken Strips $65.00
Mini Chimichangas $55.00 Teriyaki Beef Skewers *$75.00
Chicken Drummets $55.00 Baked Brie *$65.00
Scallops on the Halfshell *$50.00 Jalapeno Poppers $65.00
What if we did the $495 beef station and the $150 turkey, then picked about 8 hors d’ oeuvres and got two orders (100 pieces) each? That comes out to about $9 per head, and still could be pretty cool and dinner-like. Good idea, or tacky?
Also, as Karie might recall, they also hit you on the liquor, which all has to be served by them and at their prices ($195 per keg, $17.95 for a bottle of wine). What if we still went ahead with the ‘liquor shower’ and had an unofficial “hospitality room”?

(The hospitality room being in addition to a couple of kegs).
Other questions: Champagne toast - customary or not often done?
UPDATE:
North Liberty Recreational Center: They also have the 26th available. Room rate: $75 per hour, goes to $95 after midnight on Saturday; or $700 for weekend. They have tables and chairs but we'd need to supply the china etc. Also, if we want to serve booze we need a liquor license and a security guard. Compared to the idea above: We save $300 on the room, and the kegs of beer and champagne toast (if any) would cost half compared to the Highlander because we'd buy it ourselves. However, this could get eaten up in the liquor license - the fee schedule is here, and according to Iowa Code I think we'd be a Class A 5 day license, so that's about $97, and I've no idea what a security guard costs per hour. $20? $50? Finally, add the plates and stuff, and we might be looking at a wash, because I believe with the plan above we're into the reasonable range for caterers so I don't think we'd save significantly on the food. Am I thinking this through correctly? I've got numbers spinning in my brain.
Another factor: Those who've known me since the 90's know I had my reception for my first wedding at the Highlander. Is there a creepiness factor there? Ellen says yes, Karie says no. I'm a little hesitant about it because of that, but that's counterbalanced with a practicality of not letting the past dictate the present. Thoughts? BTW - Don says he's fine with it.
Finally: I also got through (at last) to the person-who-rents-the-Hills-American-Legion's answering machine. At least I know I'll get a callback. No idea yet on availability.

hey - don't know if my vote means anything but I don't see a problem with the highlander - and a lot of weddings now are cash bars which would save you the cost of the liquor and the rest. As for the other options - they sound good too.
I don't know, I don't think it's a bad idea. Maybe it will exorcise any bad vibes. How Catholic does that sound. ;-)
Like I said earlier, a wedding near my birthday just means an early party for me.
As for Tracy's comment, they do have a lot of cash bars but a hospitality room sounds like a great idea. Ya might have some people spending a lot of time in there though. ;-) Ya know what I like.
That's one thing we're debating about the hospitality room - since they say all liquor must be provided by them, what will they do if they find out? Should we have friends assigned to take an hour shift each to ensure it's not trashed or anything - kind of like guest book duty but MUCH more important?
about the hospitality room too - another problem is what if people try to bring the drinks to the dinner or go walking through the halls with open cups or bottles - at least here in AZ - it's a no-go - you're not allowed to do that and you can be arrested for that. Just a thought - too do you want to start off your marriage by doing something that is potentially dis-honest - since the hotel has already said that all liquor needs to be provided by them ... just a couple of thoughts ...
